El objeto de este estudio es trazar la historia del templo desde su fundación, dedicado al santo de Bari merced a una particular devoción del rey Fernando III de Castilla. La iglesia de San Nicolás figura entre los ocho templos sobre los que se estructuró el proceso evangelizador de la ciudad tras la firma del Tratado de Alcaraz en 1243.

Se cumplen ocho siglos desde el nacimiento del rey que unió para siempre su corazón a la ciudad de Murcia.
Falleció en Sevilla en 1284, pero Alfonso X había escrito en su testamento que quería ser enterrado en el Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Murcia. Entonces, los albaceas del monarca, una vez reconocido rey a su hijo Sancho IV que había librado en guerra contra su padre, entendieron provocativo llevar en pompa y boato el cuerpo del Rey Sabio hasta Murcia. Se propuso entonces una solución intermedia, dejar el cuerpo en Sevilla y que el corazón fuera enterrado en Murcia.

Debió ser aquella una de las procesiones de más enjundia de cuantas se han realizado en la ciudad de Murcia. Convergen, por un lado, la trascendencia de la denominada “procesión de procesiones”, la de la festividad del Corpus Christi, por otro, unas circunstancias históricas relacionadas tanto con la estancia en Murcia de los reyes Isabel I de Castilla y Fernando II de Aragón, como de los acontecimientos de la Guerra de Granada que entonces se estaba gestando.

Murcia me gusta. Ciudad clara de colores calientes, de piedras tostadas, color de cacahuete tostado. Y notas deliciosas de luz, las calles estrechas y sin aceras, las “veredicas del cielo”, las tiendas de los artesanos, el esparto y la cuerda. Y ahora en el crepúsculo, una luz maravillosa.
